 Earthquake Damages> Kocaeli Earthquake

 
 
The August 17 Kocaeli Earthquake

Turkey has suffered the effects of a devastating earthquake that occurred on August 17 1999 at 03:02 a.m. (Local Time). The epicenter was located near Golcuk, a town near Izmit City in Kocaeli province at the eastern end of Marmara Sea. Field surveys confirmed that the western part the North Anatolian Fault Zone has caused the main shock. The earthquake parameters have been reported to have different values by different seismological centers. The Earthquake Research Department (ERD) declared the magnitude to be Mw: 7.4, the epicenter was placed at Latitude: 40.70N, Longitude: 29.91E, and the Focal depth was set at 15.9km.

Buildings completely collapsed in GOLCUK, YALOVA, ADAPAZARI, IZMIT, AVCILAR, DUZCE, AKYAZI, GOLYAKA, SAPANCA and KORFEZ. 
According to the latest information from the Crisis Center in Ankara, the death toll of the earthquake was 15 851. Total 43 953 injuries have been reported.
